6-15-2009 9-49-28 PM Well it has been a while since I have posted  a video. I have been on a slight hiatus but I am back. And OH, what a fun time to drop back in the game. Seems Mr.. Donahoe now has a new story to tell about his dream eBay.

While I am in favor of many of the changes planed for the summer coming out of eBay (color/size variation, streamlined checkout, new page design, etc.) I am still scratching my head about where eBay wants to go.

Well for some, they think they have the answer! Seems like Mr. D had a few words for the folks at the Global Retail Summit. While while speaking at the event Mr. D said "What we need to do is capitalize during this period and make sure we’re gaining share." and to that end John equated bargain-hunting on eBay to shopping at warehouse retailer Costco Wholesale.

6-15-2009 9-51-18 PM Hmmm….Well guess what, I still DON’T GET IT? Here is where he throws me.  John said referring to Costco’s growth numbers that  "….you can build brand loyalty … around having a deal." WOW, I am sure the hard working team at Costco are probably shooting the birdie at him. It is NOT like that is all Costco did, does or continues to do, that makes their business work so well. DUDE it is not that simple man, or am I just that simple? Guess it could be me huh?

  • My recent experience with ebay has lead me to believe this guy is certifiable! Geeze, did he run a business before this? I mean really. Lets piss the people off that put the money in your pocket, come on Mr.D! Where is your brains?
Great way to continue throwing what was a good site down the drain, and don't even get me going on Paypal policy!

He's delusional. At the rapid rate ecommerce is evolving, we Ebay sellers will sooner than later have a place(s) to sell that actually have a realistic vision.
  • Gary, I doubt that move seriously would even be considered. People would not "pay to eBay". Hell, we sellers pay to eBay and that is getting OLD already, LMAO.

No, he wants buyers to find bargains like they do at Costco, but my point is that Costco operates on more than just bargains. They have:

    1. Volume
    2. Small Selection
    3. Buyer loyalty
    4. Member fees
    5. A consistent buyer experience
    6. Oh, and when you enter the store, they have a SHOPPING CART!!!
  • Does this mean he wants to charge the buyers a membership fee?
