eBay vs. Amazon Poll Results Are In

Ouch! eBay actually took a big ass thumping! At first I thought there would be some that would just vote against eBay because they could have been disgruntled. So let me give you a little background on how I came up with a plan on how to roll the poll out and get results that I felt were usable.

Sure, I have over 18,000 followers on Twitter and 1,000 between Facebook and LinkedIn, but not everyone is going to respond to things you tweet or post. So I used a rolling release across the 3 platforms and then posted it on the blog. What happened was rather interesting.

Twitter had the lowest ROP (return on a post) while Facebook more than doubled Twitter in respondents. My followers in Twitter are mostly eCommerce or eBay sellers, while Facebook is made up of people from all walks and backgrounds. You can use that data and come up with your own conclusions.

However across all platforms the resulting votes were overwhelmingly in favor of Amazon won in a 3 to 1 margin. The final results was Amazon 71% vs. eBay 29%. Now, lets put these into perspective because the sample group was small, but I believe it was diverse enough to declare Amazon and clear winner by over whelming majority vote.

Having all things equal, when respondents were given the same item found on eBay vs. Amazon, 71% said they would buy from Amazon over eBay! What does that say to me? It says that eBay is very challenged with any attempt to compete with Amazon on a level playing field. I believe eBay KNOWS this and really is not as naive as some pundants think about its positioning.

My thought is that eBay is NOT trying to "be" Amazon. However eBay does recognize…….Aw screw it, I am tired of typing….Watch the VIDEO :-)

  • Thanks my Twitter friend. Amazon sellers are more professional, hands down! If the same product is available on both platforms and for the same price, they would go to Amazon. Yup. No brainer!

Hey James, you're so wrong. Amazon.com sells majority of the products on the web site and they are INCREASING their product line very soon:

I wonder if that will hurt some of their Sellers? hmmm..... and eBay is still, just a venue.
  • @Guitar2009, You would be a moron not to compare the 2. Amazon Fulfills orders and keep very little in stock. 70% of Amazon Products are stocked and shipped by the sellers like me. 2 years ago 90% of what I sold was on eBay, Now 90% of what I sell is on Amazon, This year I have had 3 Listings on eBay with 7 sales and over 2400 Amazon sales. Many ex ebayers are now sellers on Amazon and like me stock their own inventory. Need I say more?

Two totally different platforms. eBay doesn't stock any of the items for sale on the web site. Amazon stock 95% of their items and the rest, by their sellers. BAD comparison. Only morons would compare the two sites. Try comparing eBay with another 'Auction Style' web site???
  • AH~! Not good! I tend to shop at Amazon around holidays, too.... I better fill that store - but sales are not good for me there. Thanks so much for telling us, John!

  • Let's look at just ebay. The same could be said for this type of political poll: >30% think Congress is doing a good job, but conversely 70% like their individual Congressman. It seems to make little sense! Therefore, seasoned buyers using ebay like patronizing individual sellers to make repeat purchases, but the shopping experience on ebay as a whole is dreadfully awful.
