Donahoe 200x300 eBay to Opening Physical RETAIL Space?!? OMFG!!!So once again eBay’s John Donahoe never ceases to amaze me with his dishonesty about his "machinations". I could do a million minute video on the duplicitous statement that flow from the head of eBay. Let me refresh our memories…

At Shop.org’s annual summit taking place in Las Vegas, Ellen Davis writes the following in her coverage of Donahoe’s speech

What eBay is not focusing on, he said, is retail. Calling eBay “the online outlet mall,” Donahoe assured retailers that eBay was not interested in going into the retail business and hopes merchants see eBay as an outlet for liquidated merchandise, overstocks, returns from stores, and discontinued items. Three times during his keynote (I counted), Donahoe used the phrase, “We are not a retailer.”

“The focus is to be the best marketplace,” he said. “We are not a retailer and we will never be a retailer. We’re going to be a marketplace that will not compete with its sellers.”

eBay To Open Its First Holiday StoreImagine my SHOCK and surprise to know that according to PSFK.com eBay will be opening up a retail shop in the next few weeks. Yeah, you read it right, EBay will open its first holiday store, a 5,500-square-foot pop-up at 3 West 57th Street.

The store will be stocked with a selection of Norma Kamali’s exclusive fashions for eBay, L.A.M.B shoes, handbags from Michael Kors and Dooney & Burke, Anthropologie dresses, cosmetics from M.A.C., Smashbox and other brands.

eBay to Set Up Shop in NYC Electronics, toys, home and garden items will also be displayed, but shoppers will have access to the entire eBay marketplace via Internet kiosks, handheld tablets and the eBay mobile phone application. EBay will trumpet the shop with a cocktail party Nov. 19 and on Black Friday, a limited quantity of “daily deal” items will be awarded to the first 100 shoppers who visit the store.

eBay to Opening Physical RETAIL Space?!? OMFG!!!Yeah…I see what he means when he said:

"eBay was not interested in going into the retail business" ….

“We are not a retailer and we will never be a retailer." ….

"a marketplace that will not compete with its sellers.” ….

WTF dude! Am I just stupid or can this man "lie" like a Persian rug?!? After eBay, he HAS to run for office. He is a good fit eh?

Hey John, it's a promotion not a retail space. I didn't write about this one on Ink while I was traveling for PayPal X but can put a post together for Ink that breaks it down. It's my understanding that the eBay Holiday Store in New York and eBay Mobile Boutique are promotions that eBay is running this holiday season to get folks to visit the eBay Marketplace for holiday shopping.

In fact, the merchandise selection in the stores is not for sale, but was sourced from eBay sellers and is meant to illustrate the variety of selection available on eBay. The stores will feature computer kiosks where consumers will be encouraged to shop in real time from eBay.

    Cheers buddy,

  • Thanks RBH for chiming in...I appreciate you doing the clean up. While I like this is "theory" the secrecy still has me very cautious. I will be sure to pay a visit to one of them when they stop in Atlanta in a few weeks.

Hope u had a good time at Paypal X...it got some pretty good press!

    Cheers back at ya!

  • Its going to be a little tough fitting General Motors vehicles in there. Oh wait, eBay won't have to. My bad.
  • I had to come back & read the article again, & take a close look at the pic of JD to make sure he wasn't crossing his fingers. What a liar.
  • John, one of the articles I read said the shop would only be open for a little more than a week. Sounds good to me, right in the heart of NYC, biggest shopping season of the year ... a big fat physical advertisement for eBay. Potential new eyeballs on the site for us.

I'm just hoping that they're giving some kind of coupon code to every person who goes within 5 feet of the shop so they can entice Manhattan passers-by into shopping eBay.com sometime later from home or work ... and possibly track their activity for future campaigns.

I'm sure the media will be covering this. Maybe a 'seller on the street interview.' will at least provide an attempt to get some honest coverage. Meet me in NY anyone? ; )

When ever anyone uses the word "never" BEWARE!!! Ebay is fighting to survive. Anything is possible.

  • Well John, At least they are not opening a store in Atlanta, Yet. I wonder if their Store Merchandise will be available on eBay, I can see the DSR's and Neg's Piling up to where they would have to suspend themselves. What a laugh that would be. I hope I am the one to file the first SNAD and demand a refund, then send them a box or rocks with a DC number.

Put them in the sellers Shoes so to Speak.
