Giving a helping hand with eBay and Pepsi

eBay Seller Wants To Make A Difference In The Lives Of Others with the Pepsi Refresh ProjectPepsi recently launched their Pepsi Refresh Project®, a new initiative that is looking for people, business, and non-profits with ideas that may have a positive impact in their communities, helping them overcome their issues and build a better world.

eBay entrepreneur Dianna Warner (eBayID: alleyappleauctions) from Topeka, Kansas and her husband have been eBay sellers since 1998 – and have been going full speed ever since. Recently, Dianna became a candidate to obtain the $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant to help those around her grow and develop – especially those that need it the most. Voting ends on August 31 so do not wait! PLEASE Go to http://www.refresheverything.com/onlineegeneration and vote for Dianna Warner’s project!

Here’s a brief interview with her where she discusses her background, her dreams and her future projects.

Q: So, tells us a little bit about yourself.

A: I was born and raised in Philadelphia and then I got married to my husband Chris and we moved to Brooklyn, NY. We spent 15 wonderful years there. A few members of our family fell sick and we eventually relocated in Topeka, during that time I started experimenting with eBay. It took me by surprise, because it kept bringing me amazing results even though I had done very little research on it, and 11 years later we are still using it as our source of income for both our homes. Since 2005 I’ve been formally teaching eBay at various local colleges and a local vocational school; I’m three credits away from completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Integrated Studies from Washburn University, I’ve taken a year of Mandarin, two years of Arabic as well and I’m an interpreter for the deaf since the late 1970′s.

Q: What is your Pepsi Refresh Grant project about? How are you planning to help your community out?

A: My idea is to help those around me by offering eBay classes to target groups, such as unemployed individuals, displaced workers, seniors, low income, single parents, Spanish, Deaf Communities and most of all those who have to stay at home whether to take care of their family members or their children. I would like them to tell them my story, how it’s possible to keep going on and make their dreams come true; I’d like to teach them my whereabouts, my journey and give them the tools they may need to start their own.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve had with your project so far?

A: Well, I’ve tried for months to get my submission in so that I could offer the eBay courses to those in need, I was beyond excited once I got in, but now, I’ve found it hard to get recognition from those around me. I haven’t been able to get in the radio or television, and I’ve found it hard to get out there. So, I would like to ask to all of your readers out there to help us out. Topeka is wonderful town, with very welcoming people, great dreams, so any help that I can get will be much appreciated, not only by me but by all of those who want to move ahead in life and have that entrepreneurship, and I’m pretty sure that many of you out there relate to this!

Q: So, how can we help you? What do we do to help your community with this project?

A: Well you can go to http://www.refresheverything.com/onlineegeneration and vote for it, or you can go to the http://www.refresheverything.com page and look for the 50K category and use the keywords Dianna Warner or E-generation and vote for us.

You’ve heard the story, guys, all you have to do now is give out a helping hand! Voting ends on August 31 so do not wait! PLEASE Go to http://www.refresheverything.com/onlineegeneration and vote for Dianna Warner’s project: “Teach the unemployed and low income how to create an online business”.

The Conundrum of Perception (a guest editorial by Karen)

Count The Faces - Scary Optical Illusion
In reading a few blog posts and hearing some online conversations I have notice that the conversation all boils down to one thing Perception.

Perception is a very tricky thing as not all of us acknowledge what colors our particular perceptions of events.  When I share an event, read an article or blog post what I get out of it is different for others and some of the time not even what was meant by the author or event coordinator.  How many times have 2 or more people witnessed the exact same event and had totally different recollections of what occurred.

If I am having a bad day anything I hear or read will be colored by that emotion.  A good day the same article will read entirely differently.  Some people are by nature cautious or negative so all they read and see and do has the tinge of negativity. A  bright sunny day becomes to hot, or there are dangerous UV rays or any number of other negative thoughts.  A more positive or carefree person will see it as warm, beneficial to nature and create an up beat mood.

The facts of the day are the same but they have been changed by each persons individual perception.  Somewhere between the 2 poles of perception is the reality,  yes it is hot, and yes UV rays are bad but plants need to sun to grow and produce the oxygen we need to breathe.

So who is right when it comes to the interpretation of facts and those are measurable facts, we can take the temperature, the uv rating, the humidity level.  What happens when the information is not measurable,  one of the hardest things to interpret is the written word.  There is no true way to express emotion in a blog post or a news article or even an instant message or twitter tweet.

So how do you know when you are interpreting it as intended by the author?  Human beings are not logical like computers we tend to imply emotion in everything we read, see and hear.  When you read an article that gives you an immediate visceral what do you do.  Do you look at the words and see what my have triggered that response or do you just react?  Are you putting your own feelings into the authors words or are you looking for facts to back up your feelings?  Do you talk to the author in private to see what they were trying to convey or call it out in public?

What I try to do whenever I experience a strong reaction to something is look at the context of the event, article or post.  Then I try to identify why I am feeling the reaction I am and what button did the event push in my own emotional baggage.  Most of the time strong feelings either negative or positive are based in your own emotional make-up so when you have a strong reaction take a step back see what caused your perception and see if the facts surrounding your reaction validate your perception.

Everyone has a right to his or her own opinion but it is just that an opinion that may or my not have a basis in fact and try to find a balance between the negative and the positive in each situation.  You will be much happier for it and so will those around you.

That is just my opinion colored by the perceptions my life has given me. :)

pacman 2 thumb2 Google Celebrates the 30 Year Anniversary of Packman Insert Coin to PlayBy far for me, this is the BEST home page Google has ever had!!! OMFG dude, I spent my entire life savings on this game to learn the patterns and try to get the high score. My days in the arcade with rolls of quarters in hand, boy this brings back memories for an old man :-)

Google is doing their part to commemorate the Pac Man anniversary and it began the celebration on yesterday. When you click on Google to do a search, their latest Doodle on their homepage is an actual Pac Man online game. The game will start if you click the button one time that says insert coin, and you will be playing the game.

image thumb1 Google Celebrates the 30 Year Anniversary of Packman Insert Coin to PlayIf you click the insert coin button two times, you can play the Ms. Pac Man version, that is a 2 player game. A player can move the controls with the arrow keys. For the Ms. Pac Man game for 2 players, the a, w, s, and d keys are used.

Almost everyone, not matter what their age, is familiar with this game and has played it one time or another. In the Guiness World Records, as a coin operated game, it has been the the world’s most successful.

Well, I am up this morning getting all my ‘ish together for next week. Starting on April 13, we will all descend on Las Vegas for the eCommerce Summit 2010. It is hard to believe a year has gone by so quickly. But then again, you start to reflect on the accomplishments of others and even one’s self and you realize that a year is a LONG time for change to occur.eCommerce Summit

Here are just a few of the folks that I meet at last years event and what I know they have done since then…

EbayNBeyondBlue 125 Sq What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010- Dave White of eBay and Beyond radio show moved to Chicago, became president of the ECMTA Chicago Chapter, his show is on heavy rotation and he just opened up a new sales channel on Bonanzle.

RBH headshot 800x bigger What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010- Richard Brewer-Hay of eBay Ink Blog is now like a mega corporate blogger. He has transformed the communications of eBay in social space and almost single handedly made me a believer in change at that HUGE company. He is now in high demand as he travels and speaks to others about how to do social communications in corporations.

Cool Randy What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010- Randy Smythe of Buy.com was just getting started with his new position over at Buy. Now he is a fully assimilated droid for the platform LMAO. In all seriousness, Buy.com got so much more than they probably knew with that hire. Randy has worked hard with the teams over there and now they have a burgeoning 3rd party seller platform and a great resource from eCommerce in Mr. Smythe.

twitterlogoB bigger What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010- Brandon Dupsky is the Director of ECMTA and a power house ecommerce seller. I got to work closely with him for the 2009 summit here in Atlanta and he has REALLY went big for Vegas. He works hard putting these events together and seeing what he had done this year has blown my mind! You go boy!

bio pic What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010- Phaedra Stockstill of At The Boutique is now the Social Media Rep for the fledgling sales channel of Bonanzle.com and is host of Bonanzle Boardroom podcast. She moved her business in strides by going from a small supplier to a manufacturer of products and landed a fantastic deal in the process, with a national distributer. She and I are also working on a killer project, which is set to be announced at this years eCommerce Summit, so keep your ears on.

Usher Lieberman WEB 1866 2 bigger What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010- Usher Lieberman formally with eBay is now over at The Find.com doing what he does best in the world of corporate communications. He has transfixed his sites now as the Director of Corporate Communications for them…w00t dude!

MyProfilePhote brite What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010avatara bigger What a Difference A Year Makes : Ecommerce Summit 2010- Melinda Jackson and Kat Simpson both went on to create a new podcast show called RRB Radio along with buddy Beth. And Kat move her entire operation from the west to the east this year.

These were all people that I actually met for the FIRST time last year at the eCommerce Summit and now reflecting on what they accomplished in a years time is astonishing. These are just a few of the folks, and I could go on and on about it but you get my point right? You CAN do it!

Do what?

What ever the hell you want to do!  You can do it, it might take some time, but much can happen in a year, so get to it.

I hope to see ALL of them and play catch up in Vegas next week. And I hope you will take 2010 and amp it up for yourself! I sure hope I can do some new things this year and I am sure you will too :-)

Where’s My Package? Some Cool USPS Frequently Asked Questions

USPS logo with eagle Today I had a chance to listen in on my favorite weekly podcast of eBay and Beyond with Dave, Mel and Kat doing what they do so well, chat. Then you get me on a call-in today just to stir it up and play devil’s advocate on topics. I got a problem, sometimes I am just a polarizing figure in the eBay seller community. I often say things that get me in trouble with other sellers ESPECIALLY when I am on the other side of the argument.

So the topic today was Paypal / eBay refunding payments for items shipped even when the customer says they never received it. That is a whole topic worthy of its own post! But in the conversation some interesting myths were debunked.

First off, I’m an idiot, that is not under dispute, OK? One of the misnomers I had was that mail delivered to the wrong address could be kept by the recipient. I guess that was an "old wives tale", cause the reality is that is NOT true! According to  Title18 USC Sec. 1703 (http://trac.syr.edu/laws/18/18USC01703.html) – via Beth, Kat, and Melinda

Whoever, without authority, opens, or destroys any mail or package of newspapers not directed to him, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.

So in researching this, I found a few other interesting delights that you may not know when it comes to the U.S. Postal Office and how to handle questions about it.Show Your Support for Shelter Pets...Learn More at StampsToTheRescue.com

  • USPS Delivery Times are NOT Really Guaranteed – Delivery times are not guaranteed because the volume of mail fluctuates daily.  All deliveries should be made by 5:00 PM (unless there are unusual circumstances).  We do not have the ability to find out when a mailperson will arrive at a specific location.
  • First Class Mail should be delivered normally within (5) Postal business days – If expected First Class® or Priority Mail® has not arrived within five (5) Postal business days from the mailing date, you should: Call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) where a customer service representative will document your concern. Also be sure to repeatedly call on the deity of your religious choice for assistance (ok, I added the part in italics LOL)
  • Rain, Sleet or Snow actually CAN delay your mail (remember the old saying? Well it’s not true) – Mail delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions to our carriers and/or vehicles. The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort. We appreciate your understanding of our responsibility for the safety of our employees, as well as of our customers.
  • Mail delivered to a company address belongs to the company and NOT the individual addressee – Mail that is addressed to a company is delivered to the company, including mail endorsed "Personal and Confidential" for a specific individual. Postal Service responsibility for the mail ends at that point and disposition of such mail is in accordance with each company’s policy. This also applies to mail addressed in this manner to former employees.
  • If there are disputes, mail is delivered in accordance with the wishes of the company’s president, chief executive officer, or equivalent officer.

  • Occasionally mail is mis-delivered, but can be rerouted at no cost – Despite our best efforts, occasionally mail is mis-delivered, or is delivered to an old location for an individual. If you are receiving mail for the previous resident and do not know their address, simply return the mail piece back to the mailstream (by leaving in a Collection Box® or other mail receptacle) with the notation "Not at this address" marked on the envelope.
  • Parents CAN confiscate the mail of a minor – A minor’s parent or guardian may control the delivery mail addressed to the minor.
