Victor Osimhen is the toast of football fans in Naples now after he took Napoli to the top of the Italian Serie A table with his late strike against Torino. His goal nine minutes from time gave Napoli a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Torino at home. The Nigerian striker showed his aerial prowess to lead Napoli to victory at the end of a very difficult game navigated without some first team players.
Napoli fans are starting to witness what Super Eagles of Nigeria star Osimhen can do to the opposition defence on a regular basis in his second season at the club. The Italian Serie A giants splashed a club-record fee of €70m plus €10m in add-ons to secure the signing of Osimhen from French champions Lille last summer on the back of his attacking return of 18 goals in 38 games during the 2019/20 season. The Nigerian striker had a lot of issues in his first season at Napoli and the fans were deprived of his best form as a result.
Osimhendealt with some controversies off the pitch last season in addition to injuries and testing positive for Covid-19. He still managed to finish the season with a decent return of 10 goals and three assists in all competitions with all the goal contributions coming in just 24 league games. He showed glimpses of his current red-hot form towards the end of last season.
Osimhen finished last season strongly and he has been able to continue in the same vein this season. His latest goal against Torino took him to eight goals in nine games in all competitions including five goals in seven league outings. Only the trio of Lazio striker Ciro Immobile (7 goals), Cagliari star Joao Pedro (6 goals) and veteran Inter striker Edin Dzeko (6 goals) have more goals than Osimhen in the Serie A this term.
The tall point man has scored goals to fire Napoli to the Italian Serie A summit thus making a case for himself as the best player in the division right now. Napoli fans would be hoping that the Nigerian maintains his excellent form this season as they chase a first title since the Diego Maradona days at the club three decades ago. Napoli have two league titles with the last one coming at the end of the 1989/90 season. He can attain legendary status in Naples in just his second season if he can lead his team to a first league title in 32 years with his goals.
